Field Trips

The followings are the lineup of the IOERC10 field trips. They are recommendations by the local committee members from the OE perspectives in Japan. We hope many of you will make an effort to join in as they will provide you rich experiences which may widen your views towards outdoor learning and practices.

Each trip may last one or two days, and you should be able to move to Tokyo by the time of registration on 4th March.

Applications should be sent directly to each provider, and all inquiries as well as payment are to be handled with the respective providers. By fall this year we will upload more information about the organizations and their contacts.

A. Backcountry Skiing in Hokkaido

Sunday 3 March 2023 Location : Sapporo, Hokkaido

Backcountry Skiing’ is one of popular winter activity in Japan. Hiking up on your own foot, you can admire the majestic pine forests in the harsh winter conditions and the beautiful nature in winter. You can also enjoy skiing Japanese powder snow, after hike up. This trip is guided by “FRILUFTSLIV” professional guide in Sapporo. B. Snowshoeing tour in Hokkaido

Sunday 3 March 2023 Location : Sapporo, Hokkaido

Snowshoe hike through the forests of Jozankei in winter. It is a fascinating place to see the tracks of wild animals, go butt-sliding and dive into the soft snow. Jozankei is very famous for its hot springs and is also known as the inner city of Sapporo. Enjoy the hot springs after your activities.

C. Traditional Japanese life experience in Niigata

Saturday 2 – Sunday 3 March 2023 Location : Minamiuonuma, Niigata

Staying in a small mountainous village, “Shimizu” in Niigata with snow often over 4 meters, you may experience the traditional lifestyle of “snow country” deeply connected with nature. The inn has over nine-hundred-year history and the owner is an experienced bear-hunter. Hiking with traditional local snowshoes, snow shoveling, conversation with locals, tasting local dishes with preserved edible plants, sake and more… ECOPLUS, a non-profit organization, chaired by TAKANO Takako has been providing place-based educational programs in this area.

D. Outward bound experience in Otari, Nagano

Saturday 2 – Sunday 3 March 2023 Location : Otari, Nagano

Outward Bound Japan is located Otari village next to Hakuba ski area. This area is also very famous for mountaineering to Northern Japan Alps. You can experience snow activity like snow hike or snow caving offered by OBJ and enjoy Japanese traditional hot spring after the program.

E. Caving experience on the foot of Mt. Fuji

Saturday 2 March 2023 Location : Fujinomiya, Shizuoka

Mt. Fuji is already known as the highest mountain in Japan and for its beauty. In fact, it is a volcano and has many caves at its base. On this trip, you will explore its caves and feel the spirituality of the earth.

Sunday 3 – Monday 4 March 2024  Location : Asagiri, Shizuoka

with former staff of the National Camping Association of Japan, Mayumi Sohtome

Organized camps are one of the main outdoor activities in Japan. The Asagiri Outdoor Activity Center is a facility with tent sites, main building, planetarium, gymnasium, and ice rink (only from November to March). In addition to a guided tour of the facility, you can experience several activities such as ice skating, planetarium, and mountain biking with a view of Mt. Fuji. Stay in the main building, dinner and breakfast are included.
